Motor Boats and RIBs - This is by no means as comprehensive as the listings of sailing yachts; it's a representative selection to show that Sailing Scenes also photographs power boats. If it's not here, I might still have it, so please ask.
As with the other gallery pages, they run in order of upload - earliest photos are on the first pages; most recent are last.
Yachting World Dayboat
Open Meeting 28 07 07 - As some class regulars will know, I've long had more than a passing interest in the Dayboats. I used to race one occasionally, I photographed the 50th anniversary week in Poole (that's my photo in the foyer at Poole YC) and I wrote an article on the class for Practical Boat Owner.
Nonetheless, I had no plans to cover this event - but when I kept running into the fleet in the harbour on Saturday I decided I had better grab a few pics. I probably don't have every boat, just those that happened to pass in front of the lens.
These photos are 'as taken' and will be levelled and cropped as appropriate before printing.
Round the Island Race 2007
All images (searchable) - These are all the images I took during the race. They're principally of the smaller, lower-rated and ISC classes. Sail numbers of boats suffering groundings, shredded sails or trawled spinnakers have been removed.
Some shots are of boats not in the race - so if you were in the area at the time, you might be here and will have been indexed for the search facility.
Approximate timings: I was at the Needles from 07.40 to 08.40; St Cats 10.15 - 10.30; Bembridge 12.15 - 14.00; the Forts 14.50 - 15.15; east of finish line 16.20 - 17.40.
Search tips: where possible, the photos have been indexed with boat name, sail number and class - but sometimes a bow-on shot only shows the spinnaker with no number (or the number of the boat from which it was borrowed). So if you have no joy searching by number, try the boat's name. Or try the class. In most instances I have the full designation (such as Beneteau First 325, for example), but sometimes just Beneteau, Jeanneau or whatever.
For the classics, searching on 'classic' or 'gaffer' will bring them all up. Some are still unidentified - so if you find yourself, please fill me in on the details. Similarly, if you find any indexing errors (and they're more than likely) I would be pleased to know so I can correct them.
Note: most of these images are 'as taken'; where appropriate they will be levelled and cropped before printing. Please let me know of any specific requests.
Parkstone Youth Week 2007 -
A password allows access to the galleries in the sub-sections below. Contact me if you're involved in the week and don't have it.
These are all the photos from the week's sailing. They're 'as taken', but will be levelled and cropped where appropriate before printing. If you have specific cropping requests, please ask.
To allow the fastest possible upload to the site, I haven't indexed the shots by sail number. You will need to look through the pages of the relevant class.
Orders don't have to be placed on-line. If you're local, you can tell me what you want by phone or e-mail, or call round if you prefer, and pay on collection.
Like to see shots from Youth Week 2006?
I have now created a gallery for these: look in Recent Regattas, 2006. If you know the password for this year's photos, you will be able to work out the one for last year's! Otherwise please ask.
Poole Week 2007 - These are all the shots from the week, though I might yet edit them further. They are 'as taken' and will be levelled and cropped as appropriate before printing. Please ask if you have any specific cropping requests.
The handicap fleet has been indexed by boat type, so you can search, for example, for Laser Vortex or International Moth.
J/24 Nationals 2007 - These are all the photos from the event. They have been indexed by sail number and so the search facility can be used. I'm not guaranteeing 100% accuracy in the indexing at this stage, so please let me know if you find any errors. There are one or two boats I haven't yet identified, and they're indexed as 'UID'. Again, if you find yourself among these, please let me know.
Start-line shots are generally indexed as 'start', without the numbers of every boat in the shot.
Cadet Open Meeting
Parkstone YC September 07 - These are all the photos from the event, indexed by sail number so you can use the search facility. Any boats I haven't been able to identify are indexed as 'UID'. If you find yourself among these, or find any indexing errors, please let me know. There's one other boat not indexed by number: the one with the nice shiny laminate sails, which you'll find by entering 'Touch Wood'.
Shots of the starts are indexed simply as 'start', without the numbers of every boat visible.
Dart 18 Nationals 2008
Parkstone Yacht Club - These shots have been indexed by sail number, helm/crew, club and, where prominently displayed, sponsor, so using the search box should bring up what you're looking for (except the odd boat that managed not to pass in front of the lens). I was only out on the first day, Saturday 3rd May, given the lack of wind on the other two days. Most prints are available in all sizes but in some instances I have had to limit the maximum size. For general information about prints, please see the Ordering Info page.
Poole Cruiser Winter Series
16 Dec 2007 - All these photos are indexed by boat name and class, so try using the search index if looking for a particular boat.
Because of the bouncy conditions and appalling light (despite the forecast we only got the odd glimmer of sun through heavy cloud) some of these have slightly soft edges and will reproduce best in print form at 15 x 10in or less. Others will be fine at any size. If you're interested in a sizeable enlargement, best to check with me first.
A - Z of cruising yachts - I am gradually uploading the thousands of shots of cruising yachts in my archives, which contain everything from Albins and multitudinous Bénéteaus to Yachting World Five-Tonners and Zyklons. The majority have been taken in and around Poole, where I'm based; others in the Solent, a fair few in Chichester and the rest anywhere from Falmouth to Folkestone and beyond. If you can't find yourself here but think I might have photographed your boat, please let me know. New shots are being added as I take them.
Boats are indexed by name, class/type or sail number, depending on what I could see or recognise, so try searching using the index. If you're seriously researching different types of boat with a view to purchase,
Yachtsnet's site is another one well worth visiting.
Poole Regatta 2008
- all photos indexed - All shots from the event are now indexed, so the search facility can be used for a search by boat name, sail number or class (i.e., Sigma 38, Beneteau Oceanis 311, etc.). One or two boats remain unidentifed and are just listed by class. Where there's a notable broach or an interesting sky, I have also used key-words like 'broach' or 'sky' so you can try a search on those.
Some of Monday's shots look slightly anaemic because of water on the lens. The pics can be be greatly improved by some digital enhancement (not applied to these thumbnails), which I'll do before printing. Please see the Ordering Info page for general details.
Osprey Nationals 2008
- all photos, searchable - These are the shots from Saturday and Sunday, all indexed (and therefore searchable) by sail number. The Osprey fleet is always good at confusing photographers with boats having mainsails or spinnakers from other boats - so if you can't find yourself under one number, try the other. Most boats in the fleet are here.
If doing more than one search, go back in your browser to 'search this gallery' between searches or the next search will cover the entire site. A few indexing errors have come to light (26 07 08) and are almost inevitable in a fleet of this size. I'm putting them right as I find them, but please point out any you notice.
I hope you find what you're looking for. Please contact me with any queries.
Round the Island Race 2008
- all photos now searchable - If you saw me pointing a camera at you (blue catamaran, grey sprayhood, red SAILINGSCENES.COM banners) I may well have a shot of your boat.
These photos have been indexed - and can therefore be searched by - design class (eg, Beneteau First 345, Sadler 29), boat name and sail number. In most cases I include the boat's full designation, but in a few instances it might simply be listed, for example, as 'Moody', rather than as 'Moody 336' if the angle of the shot reveals no other clues. One or two boats remain unidentified, and are therefore listed as such: 'unidentified'. If you find yourself among these, please let me know your identity!
A handful of boats that were sailing around the island but not actually in the race have been indexed as 'not racing' as well as by their class, name etc.
SEARCH TIP: if doing more than one search, you need to go back in your browser to 'search this gallery', otherwise subsequent searches cover the whole site and each of the key words individually.
Please refer to the Ordering Info page for general details, and contact me with any queries. Note that horizons are levelled where appropriate before printing, and grey, low-contrast images taken before the sun came out will be manipulated to achieve the best result.
If you don't find what you're looking for, try galleries from previous years. If it was a year when I only put a selection of shots on the site, I can send you thumbnails of any I have.
Trapper 300 Group Plymouth July 08 - These are the shots from the Thursday night's racing, plus a selection from the Dandy Hole gathering on Saturday/Sunday.
Thursday, as you will recall if you were there, was a grey old evening and the water was a yucky muddy brown! To add to the photographer's challenge (poor light and muddy colours are bad enough...) the light was changing almost by the second. It looks more like the Bristol Channel in February than Plymouth in July.
Most of these shots are 'as taken', but in a few instances I have done a little cropping or levelling or adjusted the brightness/contrast. This can be done fairly quickly with a few thumbnails but takes a lot longer with the high-res JPEGs, which will be supplied on the CD in their original, unadjusted form. Please bear in mind that when supplying prints I always do any Photoshop adjustments for best results before printing, but - especially when working on a 'covering costs' basis like this - I just don't have the time to do the same with each of several hundred JPEGs. It would take for ever! If, when you have a CD, you find a shot or two that you want to print and would like it tweaked first, let me know if you don't have the necessary image manipulation software and we can work something out. There's no point in having a boat sailing up hill or down hill, or with the crews' faces invisible because of shadow, when it's possible to do something about it. Some shots are slightly soft because I was bouncing over a wave at the time and shooting on slow shutter speeds; there's not much that can be done about that, but all of those here are crisp enough to print reasonably well at most sizes.
Please bear in mind that these are copyright images and supplied for private use only; not for web sites, publication, commercial applications or general distribution without prior agreement. I will be in touch to let you know - via James - before the article appears in PBO.
Please contact me if you have any queries.
Search facility is now working!
Youth Week 2008
Parkstone Yacht Club - These are all the photos from the event. I was out on Sunday, Monday and Wednesday and got most boats, but a few managed to escape the lens (logistical and economic considerations make it almost impossible to guarantee getting everyone).
You can find specific boats by using the search box. All images are indexed by class (Topper, Laser, Mirror etc) and by sail number. You can search using both (eg, AB 123). If doing more than one search, go back in your browser to the 'search this gallery' box; otherwise subsequent searches will cover the whole web site.
Other points to note: 1. I missed the sail numbers of a handful of boats, so if you can't find what you're looking for it might be one of these. Enter 'UID' (for unidentified) to find them. 2. The Picos aren't numbered; just enter 'Pico'. 3. If you haven't seen the photos from last year or 2006, why not have a look now? Contact me for the passwords.
Wayfarer nationals 2008
Parkstone YC - All photos are indexed by sail number, except for a few that remain unidentified (indexed as 'UID'). Search for '1234' or 'Wayfarer 1234'. If doing more than one search, you will need to go back in your browser to bring up the 'search this gallery' box, otherwise second and subsequent searches will cover the whole site.
For general information about prints and ordering, please see the ordering info page, and contact me with any queries.
Poole Week 2008
Parkstone YC - All boats can be searched for by class and/or sail number, so you can enter (for example) RS400 to bring up all the RS400s, or Enterprise 1234 if searching for a particular Enterprise.
To find the Flying Fifteens, enter Flying Fifteen (not Flying 15). For the XODs, it's XOD.
Please see the ordering info pages for general information, and contact me with any queries.
Things that weren't meant to happen - Here are some shots of things that the crew didn't actually plan... They can also be found in the appropriate event gallery.
These are among the more entertaining mishaps (from the perspective of those not on the boat at the time!) but you can find other shots of boats doing things they weren't really meant to by entering words such as 'broach', 'capsize', 'gybe' or 'aground' - depending on what you're looking for - in the main search box.
Flying Fifteen Southern Areas 2009 - These are the shots from both days, indexed by sail number, boat name and helm/crew. Key words such as 'start' (a couple of nice pin-end examples), 'finish' and 'sideways spinnaker hoist' are also included (OK, so the shot is rather closely cropped, but isn't that a head I see before me?). There are about five that I haven't yet identified, listed as 'UID' until I've figured out who they are (or the crews concerned let me know!). I think I got at least one of every boat.
As usual, these are 'as taken' so there will be a few tilted horizons. They will be levelled and cropped as appropriate before printing.
Round the Island 2009
All photos - These are all the photos I took, indexed (as far as possible) by boat name, design/class and sail number. Inevitably there are a few gaps, so if you think I shot you and you can't find your boat's name, try the sail number - or vice versa. I have also included a few boats that weren't actually competing but were going around flying ensigns.
Those few on which I've drawn a complete blank as far as indentification is concerned are listed as UID (for unidentified). If you find yourself among those, please let me know so I can index accordingly.
SEARCH TIPS
I have entered sail numbers with a space between the letters and numbers (eg, GBR 1234T). The numbers on their own will usually be enough, but if you enter GBR1234T without a space you won't find any results. Any problems, just give me a call.
Don't forget to have a look in the RTI galleries from previous years - you might find yourself there as well or instead!
Island Double 2009 - all photos - Here are all the photos - well, most of them anyway. There are several sequences as boats went past and in most cases I have edited them down - but there are still plenty of them!
I have left in the odd broach and spinnaker-wrap. Occasionally in the past I have attempted to spare blushes by leaving out such shots, only to find that they've been asked for or that I have lost business by not showing them, so if you were in mid-broach or losing a battle with a recalcitrant spinnaker as you went by, you're probably on these pages. If you borrowed the boat and really don't want the owner to see what happened, you had better let me know.
Inevitably given the conditions, a few shots aren't totally sharp. Taking photos with a long lens from a small boat when bouncing around in 25 knots of wind against the tide isn't without its challenges and it can be hard to focus on the right point or avoid any camera shake. As a result I will be limiting the maximum size of print in some cases as I work through them over the next day or two.
As it was a bit lumpy and I didn't fancy drowning my camera kit off St Catherine's I only shot for a while just past the Needles and didn't get as many boats as I might have done - so I'm sorry if I missed you. If I sell enough pics I'll be back with a helicopter next time.
Parkstone Youth Week 09 - all photos, searchable - All shots of all the fleets are now here. To see an entire class, enter (for example) Mirror, 420, Laser Radial or Topper Silver in the search box. To find a specific boat, enter the class followed by a space and then the sail number (e.g. Mirror 70564, AB 302 or Laser 189098). Picos aren't indexed by number because a lot of them didn't have numbers; just look under Pico.
There will inevitably be a few errors in the indexing. If you find any, please let me know!
I have indexed each boat according to the number on the sail(s). If, as happened in quite a few instances, one boat was using sails from another, look under the number of the 'borrowed' sails. Some Cadet spinnakers caused some confusion. If in doubt, try it both ways!
For general and non-racing shots (RIBs, committee boats, water-wars etc), see the sub-section below.
Youth Week - general & non-racing shots - Here you will find shots of the rest of Youth Week - not the racing, but the rescue boats and RIBS, water wars, shots of launching and so on.
These are all indexed too, so you can use the search box to look for water wars, committee boat, RIB, rescue, mother ship, launching or dinghy park. But it's best just have a browse through this section and see what appears.
Poole Week 2009 (all photos) - All shots from the four days of racing (pity we didn't have all six!) are on the following pages.
To find an entire class, enter (for example) Dart, Dolphin or RS400 in the search box. To find a specific boat, enter the class followed by a space and the sail number - eg, Dart 1234, Dolphin 34, RS200 432, Flying Fifteen 3212, XOD 21.
If you enter Laser, you will get any Laser 4.7s, Laser 2s or Laser Bahias as well. Entering Laser 4.7, Laser 2 or Laser Bahia will bring up those particular boats.
Should you be unable to find a boat, either I don't have a pic (I have most, but might have missed you if you only sailed some of the races) or I couldn't identify its sail number. In that case, just enter the class and go through the shots.
Please ask if you have any queries.
Poole Winter Series 2009 - These are shots from 25th October, 6th December (including the odd capsize, near-sinking, dismasting and lifeboat rescue), 13th December and 20th December. They're mainly of cruisers in the harbour, with a few dinghies as well, though I was in the bay on 20th.
To find any particular boat or boats, enter the name, design class or sail number in the search box. Entering 'dismasting' or 'lifeboat' will bring up the shots of things that weren't meant to happen...
More shots from 6th, 13th and 20th December will be added - so far it's just a preliminary selection.
* The most recent shots are on the last pages *
Arcona yachts' rally 31st October 2009 - Who would believe this was the last day of October? From the photographic perspective conditions weren't perfect, but all things considered it was not a bad day. The main problem was keeping tabs on everyone after East Lepe because the fleet got so spread out. A few more buoys to go around would have made the 'spot the Arcona' game a little easier!
These shots are indexed by the boat's name, class (Arcona 340, Arcona 400, Arcona 430) and sail number (no need for the letters as well), so you can enter any of those in the search box.
I would have joined you in Lymington afterwards to show some pics on the laptop but there are so many fishing buoys on the way back to Poole and I didn't fancy getting one caught around each prop in the dark with a gale on the way.
If you can't find what you're looking for, or have any queries, please let me know.
